PSHE and RHE Curriculum

As a part of your child’s educational experience at Harold Court Primary School, we aim to promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive taught programme of PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) education that gives children and young people the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live healthy, safe, productive and fulfilled lives, both now and in the future. Evidence shows that well-delivered PSHE programmes have an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

At Harold Court we have chosen to use a combination of SEAL and  Jigsaw PSHE scheme of work to deliver our PSHE curriculum.

What is Jigsaw PSHE?

Jigsaw PSHE is a comprehensive and completely original Scheme of Work for the whole Primary School from Nursery through to Year 6. It brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. The statutory guidance for Relationships and Health Education for primary schools is also covered within this scheme.

Relationship and Health Education (RHE)

The Department for Education has made changes to relationships and sex education following nationwide consultation which came into effect from September 2020 and all schools are required to comply with the updated requirements. The statutory guidance can be found by using the link below:

Relationship Education, Relationship and Sex Education and Health Education

The RHE guidance focuses on healthy relationships and keeping children safe in the modern world. It also covers a wide range of topics relating to physical and mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and healthy relationships.

Learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up will give children and young people the information, skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling relationships and help them take responsibility for their own well-being.

We have reviewed our RHE  curriculum and policy so we can be sure our RHE provision is appropriate for our pupils based on their:

  • Age and developmental stage
  • Physical and emotional maturity
  • Religious and cultural backgrounds
  • Special educational needs and disabilities

As part of this process, the school consulted with parents, staff and governors that helped to inform our schools’ decisions on when and how certain content is covered.

The consultation questions were as follows:

  • How easy is the policy to understand? Is there anything we can do to make it clearer?
  • Are there any topics we are not covering in our RHE curriculum that you think we should?
  • Are there any topics we are covering in our RHE curriculum that you think we should not be?
  • If you wish to make any other comments please do so below

This consultation enabled us to reach a general consensus and we made adjustments to our policy and curriculum based on this feedback.
